Can ChatGPT Summarize Research Papers? [For Students]

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot that can generate human-like text using a large language model developed by OpenAI. Since its release in November 2022, millions of users have continued to test its capabilities.

Since one of the chatbot’s abilities is to read large volumes of text in a short period, a student eyeing a close deadline might wonder if ChatGPT can save them some time by summarizing long research papers that are required reading.

ChatGPT can summarize research papers. It has been trained on a vast amount of text data from diverse sources, including research papers, which allows it to learn patterns, language structures, and key concepts present in academic literature. It also leverages its vast knowledge base to provide contextually appropriate summaries.

How can you get ChatGPT to expertly summarize a research paper for you? Are its summaries reliable? And are there better summarizing tools out there? In this article, we provide insight into these. Read on to learn more.

Can ChatGPT Summarize Research Papers?

Summarization is certainly one task that ChatGPT can do quite well. It uses natural language processing techniques to understand the context and meaning of the text and summarize it in a concise manner. It can thus summarize research papers in a way that captures the main points and findings of the papers.

However, the quality of the summary may depend on various factors, such as the length and complexity of the paper, the quality of the language used, and the specific requirements of the user.

You must bear in mind as well that it may not always capture all the important details. Therefore, it is important to use ChatGPT as an aid in the summarization process, rather than relying solely on its output.

Also, note that there is a limit on the number of words ChatGPT can process and summarize via one prompt. While the newest version, GPT-4 can process up to 25, 000 words, the free ChatGPT is sometimes limited.

Attempts to get ChatGPT to process more than this number of words will lead to unresponsiveness or an error message.

If attempting to summarize a large research paper with the free ChatGPT,  a trick around this word limit is to input the paper in smaller chunks of 500 words. You should direct ChatGPT via your prompt to wait till you are done inputting all the words before it commences with its summary.

You do not need to break down your paper manually. Luckily several tools have been developed to meet this need. A few of them are ChatGPT Prompt Splitter, Long Prompt Splitter, and ChatGPT Splitter.

How to Summarize Research Papers With ChatGPT [Step-By-Step Procedure]

To summarize a research paper using ChatGPT, the following step-by-step procedure can be followed.

Step 1: Copy the text you intend to summarize. If your research paper’s word count is on the high side, use a prompt splitter to split it into different chunks.

Step 2: Before pasting the text, enter the necessary prompt, telling ChatGPT to summarize it

Be specific about the length and tone of the summary. If using a prompt splitter, it would likely generate a prompt explaining to ChatGPT to hold off summarizing till you’re done pasting all the parts. Copy and paste this prompt.

Step 3: Go ahead and paste the text into ChatGPT’s chat box. Here’s the sample below.

Step 4: ChatGPT will then analyze the text and generate a summary.

If the summary is unsatisfactory, you can give ChatGPT further prompts to adjust the length, change the tone or focus on specific sections or themes of the paper.

Step 5: Finally, the summary can be reviewed and edited as needed.

It is important to note that while ChatGPT can provide a summary of the research paper, it is not a substitute for reading the entire paper. The summary should be used as a tool to quickly understand the main points of the paper and to determine if further reading is necessary.

Can ChatGPT Read PDF and Summarize?

ChatGPT can read and summarize a PDF document only if you use a specialized tool to copy and paste the contents into your ChatGPT prompt box. ChatGPT does not have the ability to read documents directly, whether in PDF format or otherwise.

If you are concerned about the high volume of the paper in question or you just want to reduce the possibility of leaving out a line or a page, a number of tools can help out here. BookGPT is one of such tool.

To use it, go to OpenAI’s API keys page. It would require you to log in to ChatGPT if you are yet to. Once on the page, select the “create new secret key” option.

Copy the secret key it generates. Then visit the BookGPT site and paste your API key under “OpenAl API Key.” Now, in the question box, enter the prompt directing ChatGPT to summarize and upload your pdf file via the upload button.

You can also use an extension like ChatGPT File Uploader Extended to upload PDF files onto ChatGPT. It is available in the Chrome Web Store.

It functions as an integration of a PDF uploader and a prompt splitter so you don’t need a prompt splitter with this.

What Is the Best Summarizer for Research Papers?

In my own experience, Quillbot is the best summarized for research papers. But there are a number of other great text summarizers that work amazingly well with research papers. Quillbot, IBM Watson Discovery, Semantic Scholar, Resoomer, Scholarcy, Text Compactor, SummarizeBot, and SMMRY are a few.

Note, however, that when it comes to choosing the best summarizer for research papers, it ultimately depends on personal preference and needs. The various summarization tools available, each have their advantages and disadvantages. Some tools may have a better accuracy rate, while others may be more user-friendly.

Additionally, some summarizers may be better suited for specific fields or types of research papers. For instance, a summarizer that works well for scientific papers may not be as effective for social science papers. Scispacy is one such summarizer as it is well suited to scientific papers.

Ultimately, the best summarizer is the one that meets the user’s requirements and produces a summary that is accurate, concise, and easy to understand.

While ChatGPT is capable of summarizing large amounts of text, it might not be the best suited for research papers as it may not capture the context adequately.

This is not to say that it cannot be an aid in analyzing and summarizing research papers. However, it is advisable to use it alongside other AI tools that are specifically developed for summarization.

Also bear in mind that regardless of how good your choice of summarizer is, none is not 100% foolproof. It is, therefore, important to proofread any summary generated.

This is especially the case with research papers because of the highly specialized language employed and the context-specific meanings of words used.
